Course Overview
This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials.
Occupational titles may include:
- Carpenter – Commercial
- Carpenter – Formwork
- Carpenter – Residential
State and territory jurisdictions may have different licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.
Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 International students also need English proof: IELTS score of 6 (for listening, reading, writing and speaking) or equivalent in line with the Department of Education and Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic 47-54, TOEFL IBT 60-78, CAE Scale 169-175.
Results older than two years are not acceptable (for offshore applicants)

Completion of Year 12 VCE or equivalent overseas
qualifications. Additionally, having a strong interest
in the building and construction industry and
possessing adequate literacy and numeracy skills
are important.
Additional Requirements
- Safety Boots (Steel-Capped or Composite-Toe): Protect feet from nails, dropped timber, and heavy tools or equipment.
- High-Visibility Clothing or Vest: Ensures visibility when working in busy or shared work areas.
- Safety Glasses or Goggles: Protect eyes from sawdust, wood chips, and debris while cutting, drilling, or sanding.
- Hearing Protection (Earplugs or Earmuffs): Reduces noise exposure from power tools such as circular saws, nail guns, and planers. · Gloves (Cut-Resistant or Work Gloves): Protect hands from splinters, cuts, and abrasions when handling timber and tools.
- Dust Mask or Respirator (P2 or Equivalent): Prevents inhalation of sawdust or airborne particles, especially when sanding or cutting.
- Hard Hat: Protects against falling objects, particularly in construction or framing environments.
- Long Work Pants and Long-Sleeved Shirt: Provides skin protection from splinters, sharp edges, and UV exposure.
- Hearing and Eye Protection Combo Face Shield (Optional but Recommended): Offers added protection during high-risk power tool operations.
