Course Overview
This course is designed for international students with different academic, cultural, personal, and working backgrounds who have no prior experience of working in the Building and Construction sector but have a desire to be engaged in learning with the aim of gaining an industry recognized qualification leading to employment within the Building and Construction Industry. For these students the priority is attendance and completion of this course, with employment or other commitments scheduled around it.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18International students also need English proof: IELTS score of 6 (for listening, reading, writing and speaking) or equivalent in line with the Department of Education and Department of Home Affairs (DHA)Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, Occupational English Test (OET), Michigan English Test (MET)
Academic Requirement
Completion of Year 12 VCE or equivalent overseas qualifications. Additionally, having a strong interest in the building and construction industry and possessing adequate literacy and numeracy skills are important.
Additional Requirements
Northwood International College (NIC) conducts a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment during orientation to gauge each student’s skill levels and determine the level of support needed for timely completion of the qualification; this assessment is diagnostic only and does not restrict course entry. Additionally, students must obtain a construction induction (white) card before undertaking any site visits.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required when visiting a construction site. (Steel cap boots, Hard hat, High Vis and Glasses)
Assessment
Students are required to complete a minimum of 840 hours of Face to Face, 60 hours site visits and 360 hours of assessment and self-study. Students are also required to have access to

The course runs over 42 weeks and includes 20 contact hours each week, made up of two classroom days (16 hours) and one online real-time class (4 hours). In addition, students complete 240 hours of self-directed study for further reading and research, along with 60 hours of practical assessments delivered across eight days (two days per term, 7.5 hours each). A site diary supports structured practical learning.
